In the case of this big ranch house, all of the bathrooms, the kitchen, a bar area, laundry room and some built-in cabinets in the hallway all got new granite counters made out of Neptune Bordeaux.
That’s a LOT of granite, if we do say so ourselves.

Austin has a LOT of homes built in the 1970s and 1980s.
And with that age home usually comes cultured marble countertops in the master bathroom. After 30 to 40 years of use, most look, um, less than beautiful.

We have a 3cm Tan Brown Granite remnant big enough for one looooong bathroom countertop, or two shorter ones. The remnant is 22 1/2-inches by 128-inches long. So, over 10 feet long, almost 11. 22 1/2-inches is the standard depth for bathroom vanity countertops (kitchen counters are usually 25 1/2-inches).
We can cut it into one or two counters, with two undermount sink holes (polished edges) for $650. Heck, we’ll even put in two porcelain sinks that we have here in the shop – oval or rectangular for that price. Heck, we’ll even come and template your counters, polish the edges with any of our standard edges (bevel, flat-polish, bullnose, pencil round) and install the counters anywhere in Austin for that price.

We don’t normally demo (take out) the old counters. If you really really really don’t want to get someone else to do it, we can give you a bid for that.
You’ll need to have your faucets on-site when we come to install the counters, to make sure the holes are the right size and in the right spots.
We will install the sinks – meaning attach them to the underside of the counter – but we don’t hook up the plumbing. You’ll need a plumber for that (or DIY skillz).

Did you know you can have nicer granite vanity tops for less than you might imagine?
We have had the honor of working with a Round Rock homeowner to replace every bathroom vanity top (and kitchen counters, and gameroom counters, and more!) in an older home that she has been remodeling for her large family.
By carefully re-purposing cabinets from the kitchen to other places in the home, and then selecting granite remnants from our shop off North Lamar in Austin, this homeowner managed to keep tight control of her budget and still get knock-out bathroom vanities.
When I checked on the installation at the home this afternoon, I dragged along my big camera and snapped just a few photos to share. The electrical is incomplete, so most of the rooms were too dark for photography. These two photos should give you an idea of how you can combine older cabinets with fresh paint and granite remnants for a thoroughly updated look in an older home.
The darker counter is a granite called Fiorito, and looks marvelous with the dark brown paint on the cabinet. The lighter vanity counter is Colonial Gold granite paired with a pale ivory cabinet paint.
Both of these counters have a flat-polish edge and rectangular undermount sinks.
If you live in Austin, Texas, chances are your house is a little, um . . . older. Older house means older bathroom vanity tops, and older bathroom cabinets.
Sooner or later, you might want to update.
And that means making some decisions about which materials to use.
Sometimes it’s fun to go with something really trendy, and sometimes you just want something that will endure the test of time.
This bathroom is in a vintage 1980s home in NW Austin. The house was well-built and the cabinets were sturdy, so it made more sense to paint them than to rip them out.
The first round of remodeling was completed in 2006 and all was fine.
Flash forward 5 years and three little kids later and some of the stuff from the original remodel needed to be replaced. The first round of floor tile was replaced with an eco-friendly porcelain tile which was also used in a new shower surround.
The original doors on the cabinet were replaced with custom doors from Austin’s own Patton Cabinet Doors, and the whole cabinet was repainted. Notice that the Uba Tuba granite vanity top looks as good in 2011 as it did in 2006.

Here is how it works: for your new granite counters to be installed, the old countertops have to come out. Whether we take them out, or someone else takes them out, the water will need to be shut off to the sink that is installed on the old counters. If your shut-off valves work, then this is easy.
If the shut-off valves leak, then this isn’t so easy.
You need to get new ones put on before the counters can come out.
The shut-off valves are the little silvery oval things you can see in the photo – one to the right and one to the left of the drain. To turn off the water, turn them to the right.
Sing this: “righty tighty, left loosy” as you turn them to make sure you’re doing it right.
Then, turn on the faucet and see if the water still turns on. If so, you need to do some plumbing work before we can install your new granite counters.
Replacing your shut-off valves might be easy, or it might not be.
If you’ve done a lot of plumbing, then you know that no matter how many of these you have replaced, this one might be the one that stumps you.

So, here is what we recommend: Call a plumber! Or, if your are DIY-brave, you can Google for things like these and read a few articles until you understand the process:

Beware – some neglect you to first shut off the water to your house!! Make sure you do that first, or water will be spraying all over!
Oh, and make sure to start this in the morning, so the big box home remodeling stores are open. You might be making a few trips so you really don’t want to start late at night.
Oh, and puh-lease do this several days or a week before we arrive to install your new granite counters or you will be disappointed and our guys will be extra tired from having to put your beautiful new counters back on the truck to bring them back to the shop to wait for a later installation date.

That was snagged from a post I (Alison) wrote several years back called You Can Do It Yes You Can about updating a bathroom in my 1980s home in NW Austin.
Those are shut-off valves – the ones that I wnet through trying to DIY before calling a plumber.
The base color in Santa Cecilia granite is usually a pale cream, sometimes lighter, sometimes a little darker, sometimes with a little more gold.
With brown, gold and red speckles, it is a traditional favorite for granite kitchen countertops and for granite bathroom vanity tops. It goes with almost any color of wood, and many painted and glazed cabinet finishes as well.
This remnant of Santa Cecilia is big enough for a 42-inch wide bathroom vanity top, including the overhang in the front and one or both sides.
Drop off your measurements and a 50% deposit ($87.50) at our shop off of North Lamar and we’ll cut it to fit, including a polished undermount sink hole for $175. Your new bathroom vanity top custom-made from Santa Cecilia granite will be ready for you to come back and get it in under a week.
