We recently had the privileged of working with a homeowner in Northwest Austin when they remodeled the kitchen in their 1980s home. The light wood cabinets were in great shape and the configuration of the kitchen suited the homeowners well. The addition of Absolute Black Granite brings this kitchen into the year 2010 and provides the gorgeous counters that are in such high demand in established neighborhoods such as this one where the original counters were laminate, or occasionally tile.
This kitchen also had a tumbled stone back splash set on the diagonal.
This type of tile set takes more time and patience but looks fabulous when done, especially with the occasional inset black granite tiles. The edge on this granite is full bull nose. This kitchen required two slabs of 3 cm granite – the photos don’t show well that in addition to the long sink counter, island and cook top counter, the kitchen also has a large breakfast counter.
Most of the homes in Allendale in Northwest Austin are older, and frequently we see photos of Allendale Re-Dos, or remodels. We very very surprised and fortunate, therefore, to have a chance to work with the builder of this high-end new home in Allendale, designed to the exacting specifications of the single male homeowner. The exterior of the home blends seamlessly with the vintage character of the neighborhood while the interior sports an exceptionally fresh, yet subtly masculine look. The kitchen in particular calls upon colors that remind us of a custom tailored suit – greys and blacks, with just the right amount of punch.
Yes, we know our name is Toluca GRANITE but we also LOVE Marble, especially when we get the chance to fabricate (that means “make” in granite-shop terms) some really cool bathroom counters in a fabulous, complex, rich marble such as this Emperador Dark.
The photos illustrate, beautifully, how many different places the marble (or granite) can go in this small space – on the multi-level counters and on the backsplash, and in a little j-shaped slice on the other side of the room on top of a glass block wall (the pictures of that wall has too many artifacts in them to post here!).
The edge profile on this marble is 1/2-inch bevel, one of the most popular edges due to its simplicity and timelessness.
This dark brown marble is especially attractive with a vessel sink because the sink permits maximum counter space and showcases the complexity of this material – the coloration, veining and movement, which all add character to this Emperador Dark marble counter.
Jan Mahaffey Blatchley of It’s Faux Real Interiors used Giallo Ornamental granite for the countertops in this remodeled kitchen in Austin, Texas.
This lovely granite works very well with the small pieces of slate on the backsplash. The Giallo Ornamental also looks nice with the pretty glaze on the painted cabinets. The cabinets and the granite have almost an aged, old world look to them even though they are in a newer home.
When materials like these are used in a kitchen, they set the stage for the accessories to get more attention. The home owner can introduce reds, oranges, greens, or many other colors to the space in accessories or fabrics to change up the look. This space can also be re-decorated for different seasons or holidays without having to worry too much about matching colors.
