Absolute Black Granite in a Kitchen Remodel

The Absolute Black Granite Updates a 1980s Kitchen

We recently had the privileged of working with a homeowner in Northwest Austin when they remodeled the kitchen in their 1980s home. The light wood cabinets were in great shape and the configuration of the kitchen suited the homeowners well. The addition of Absolute Black Granite brings this kitchen into the year 2010 and provides the gorgeous counters that are in such high demand in established neighborhoods such as this one where the original counters were laminate, or occasionally tile.

Tumbled Stone Back Splash

This kitchen also had a tumbled stone back splash set on the diagonal.

This type of tile set takes more time and patience but looks fabulous when done, especially with the occasional inset black granite tiles. The edge on this granite is full bull nose. This kitchen required two slabs of 3 cm granite – the photos don’t show well that in addition to the long sink counter, island and cook top counter, the kitchen also has a large breakfast counter.

Masculine Kitchen in Allendale in Northwest Austin

Most of the homes in Allendale in Northwest Austin are older, and frequently we see photos of Allendale Re-Dos, or remodels. We very very surprised and fortunate, therefore, to have a chance to work with the builder of this high-end new home in Allendale, designed to the exacting specifications of the single male homeowner. The exterior of the home blends seamlessly with the vintage character of the neighborhood while the interior sports an exceptionally fresh, yet subtly masculine look. The kitchen in particular calls upon colors that remind us of a custom tailored suit – greys and blacks, with just the right amount of punch.

Designer Kitchen with Giallo Ornamental Granite

Jan Mahaffey Blatchley of It’s Faux Real designed this remodeled kitchen and selected Giallo Ornamental granite for the countertops. This classy granite works exceptionally well with the diagonally-set small pieces of slate and the subtle glaze on the painted cabinets -a bit of an aged, old world look meets current custom home. These materials permit the accessories in the room to sing without competing for attention – the home owner can introduce reds, oranges, greens, or a myriad of other soothing or energizing colors palettes to the space in accessories or fabrics to change up the look seasonally, or whenever the mood strikes. When your granite counters lend themselves to ALL of the looks you love, you know you’ve chosen a winner!

Antique Brown Granite Counter

When designing your kitchen, consider the interplay between the colors and materials. Strive for a mixture of reflective surfaces (the granite, and the stainless steel) and matte finishes (the travertine tiles between the countertops). This designer kitchen is simply gorgeous – a professionally coordinated materials palette that mixes light and dark natural materials with semi-custom cabinetry. The under-mount small copper sink adds convenience for the multi-cook kitchen. Antique Brown granite and travertine tile – a winning combination!

Uba Tuba Granite Surrounds a Giant Farmhouse Sink

This one turned out to be one of the bigger ones – it weighs several hundred pounds and took three men to place it into position under the counter. The flat-polish on this uba tuba granite compliments the urban cottage feel of this kitchen while the farmhouse style sink adds extra capacity in an existing sink cabinet that was narrower than the homeowner would have preferred.
